MALE INFERTILITY
Male Infertility is a general term used to denote all possible reasons for a sperm not being able to fertilize an egg. A very surprising fact is that around 10% of all couples suffer from infertility and for about one-third of them; the problem is due to male reproductive problems.
Some of the possible reasons for male infertility may include:
- Low sperm levels
- Poor sperm motility
- Abnormally shaped sperm
- Blocked tubes
- Varicocele (varicose veins in the scrotum)
- Retrograde ejaculation
- Hormone imbalances
- Injured testicles
It is estimated that 40% of male infertility is due to problems with the sperm.
Male infertility is diagnosed firstly by physical examination where blood test is carried out to rule out any underlying health conditions and the next step would be semen analysis.
Treatment for Male Infertility
Life style changes:-maintain healthy body weight stop smoking and drinking.
The initial treatment will look at any underlying conditions such as hormone imbalance. Minimally invasive surgery like vasoepidymostony may be advised to remove a blockage.
Sperm Retrieval Surgeries like TESA, MESA,PESA. TESA may be required if there is Azoospermia or very low sperm count
The doctor may recommend assisted reproduction technology such as:
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) : Here a sample of the semen is treated in to remove chemicals that interfere with fertilizing an egg. The treated sperm then is injected into the partner’s uterus at the time she’s ovulating. IUI is often a good choice for men with a low sperm count, limited sperm motility, and ejaculation problems.
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) : In this method, the urologist extracts sperm from the testicles or epididymis of the male, then the experts at Womb Fertility evaluate the sperm and choose the healthiest ones to fertilize the partner’s egg in the lab.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) :During ICSI, the woman’s eggs are retrieved and sent to the lab. The doctor then retrieves a single, healthy sperm and injects the sperm directly into the egg. After several days, the embryo is then carefully placed inside the woman’s uterus.
